Dont Just

Learn A Trade

Will's School Of Plastering, Always here to help you take the next step.

Why People Choose Us?

Welcome to Will’s School of Plastering, here we offer courses to help develop your skills you may already have within the Plastering industry or to gain the understanding and skills if you are totally new to the trade. There is the option of having short or long term courses but it all depends on where you want to be at the end stage. On all of the courses available questions are more than welcome to be asked and they will all be answered.

An example of one of the courses would be the short term course which we tend to offer to beginners as this allows them to get the basic understanding of the tools and the techniques on how to use the hand board and trowel. However it’s all down to you and how much dedication and time you want to put in. On the courses you will learn the technique of the hand board and trowel by applying sand & lime and gradually learning to skim and plaster boarding but this doesn’t stop there you will also be able to learn a  range of other things such as ; rendering, metal partitioning, cornice, 2 coat plastering and coving. Learning these topics all depends on the course type you’ve chosen and how much knowledge you have.

Work You Will Learn

Short Term Courses (5 Days Long)

The short term courses are 5 days long. On the short courses you can be a complete beginner or you can already work within the Plastering industry but just want to polish up your skills. When joining a short course as a beginner you will learn the basic knowledge of the trade and learn a limited amount of skills. The skills learnt will be handling the tools, understanding the techniques and health & safety. Once completing the short course as a beginner you will have the basic knowledge of plastering which is a start to becoming a plasterer but there is much more to learn.

However, doing a short course as someone who is either plastering already or has the knowledge of the trade can also benefit from a short course as you may just have some unanswered questions or want guidance on a certain area. Being someone who already knows about the trade, you can just have a short course on the areas of plastering you feel you struggle with. This doesn’t mean you will go back over the basic knowledge you already know this means you will work on your own selected area.

Long Term Courses (3 weeks upwards)

The long term courses tend to start from 3 weeks upwards. These long term courses allow you to expand your knowledge on plastering. If you are a beginner and want to book onto one of the long term courses you are more than welcome. The knowledge and skills that will be taught within the long term course will be spread among the amount of weeks you have chosen. If this is an option to you as a beginner there will be a lot more skills covered, as well as the basic knowledge of Plastering, compared to the short term courses as there will be more time to learn. Some people also choose to take this course when they have already learnt the basics of the trade and they want full focus on developing into a plasterer.

This is when you are more advanced and have had the experience of already applying the basic knowledge elsewhere either within Will’s School of Plastering or on a plastering job. Doing this type of course after a short term tends to be helpful as well as you have already got the beginners knowledge and are able to learn the more complex skills i.e. 2 coat plastering or able to complete the full process of plastering a wall from boarding to the finishing image ready for decorating. At the end of this type of course you will finish with a large variety of skills able to help you along the way of your plastering career for when you start to work within the industry.

Skimming

Skimming – this is a plastering technique which involves applying a thin coat twice to existing walls or plaster boards to create a smooth finish required for any painting or decorating afterwards. This technique is applied using a hand board and trowel.

Plasterboarding

plaster boards are attached to existing walls or can be added to stood-walls. They are used to make interior walls and ceilings. Plaster boarding is when the plasterboard is attached to the wall by screws, when that is finished you skim on to the plasterboards.

Dotting

This refers to the way plasterboard adhesive is applied evenly in spaced out dots and dabs across a surface of the wall. This then allows plasterboard to stick to the existing walls.

Metal partitioning

Metal stud partitioning is used to create a stud wall by forming a frame of metal studs. Stud walls are usually made within house extensions, loft conversions or to change the layout of a room. Plaster boards would be attached to this framework allowing skimming to take place.

Rendering

Rendering is something used on the exterior walls of a building. Rendering gives off a more coarse finishing touch and is has more strength that plaster. This can either by applied by hand and tools or a specific machine. Render can be used as a way of decorating the exterior walls as well as protecting the bricks/blocks of the property.

2 coat plastering

2 coat plastering is where browning (backing plaster) is applied to block work or brick work at 8 – 10mm thick. Then scratched up in the figure 8 motion. Multi – finish is then applied and finished ready for decoration.

Cornice

This is a decorative moulding designed to cover the gap between the walls and ceiling.

Coving

coving is a curved or shaped piece of plasterboard used as a fitted feature at the joint of a wall and ceiling.
